A Great Time At The Rensselaer County Schaghticoke Fair

September 7, 2012 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
The Rensselaer County Schaghticoke Fair has been in operation for 193 years. It is the third oldest Fair in New York State. Weather conditions were great for the entire week of the Schaghticoke Fair. On Thursday, August 30, the weather was absolutely perfect – sunny, cool and breezy. There was plenty of stuff for the whole family to see and do all day and all evening. Area farms and businesses were well represented. Friends and folks from nearby towns won blue ribbons with their vegetables and fruits. [private]The homemade quilts, knitted items, photographs and other handcrafts were as impressive as always.

In the NY State building folks were lined up to get some Stewart’s ice cream. There was Rock Pop Popcorn from Refuge on the Rock Farm in Buskirk, maple syrup from Running Brook Sugar Shack in Hoosick and honey from Belden Farm, also in Hoosick. There was Cirque Zerbini to see and the Polka Band to enjoy and much, much more. That doesn’t even count the carnival rides and the evening events.
The fun at the fair included catching up with folks you don’t see that often and sampling the food, like a delicious root beer float!
The Fair is an event to look forward to every year because every year there is something different to see and enjoy.
Some Area Presenters At The Fair included:
• Debra Hoffman of Petersburgh who received blue ribbons for her eggs.
• Hoosick Falls resident Eleanor Calhoun received several blue ribbons, for her dahlias, a dried  floral arrangement and an all white arrangement.
• The Hoosick Grange received a blue ribbon for its display on healthy eating.
• Alex Marbot of A Marbot Farm presented his cows.
• Kenneth Marbot of the Hoosick Moos 4-H showed one of his groomed Holsteins.
• Dan McMahon of Hooskip Farm in Hoosick showed his cows.
• Dr. Cliff Belden and Marianne Zwicklbauer of Belden Farm in Hoosick had honey and produce from their farm in the NYS products building.
• Gary Keegan and Walter Ogden had maple syrup and products from Running Brook Sugar Shack in Hoosick on display.

With its shaggy bangs, this little Scottish Highlands ox at the Schaghticoke Fair could be called cute. He is a year old and small in size. He was part of a pair that were preparing for a class in following commands from Terra Putman of Johnsonville. (Bea Peterson photo)
