The Grafton Historical Society’s May meeting will be held at the Grafton Town Hall on September 19 at 7 pm. The program is an overview of Granville Hicks (1901-1982) – his life and work.
Hicks taught English at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1929 until his controversial dismissal in 1935. He continued to live in Grafton until the late 1970s. [private]Hicks had many talents – literary critic, novelist, biographer, activist and teacher. He viewed himself as an intellectual in a small town and his most famous book, Small Town, was the first sociological analysis of small town American life by an author who actually lived in the small town he wrote about. The presentation will touch on his life in Grafton and his legacy. It will be complemented by a display of his books, several signed by him. The presenter, Bob Mayo, is the Director of the Rensselaer Libraries at RPI and lives in Grafton.
