September 28, 2012 By eastwickpress

Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast is pleased to welcome Paula Brown as an AmeriCorps member. She chose to work with HFHMGC’s dedicated staff and volunteers to help in Habitat’s work to build and repair decent and affordable housing.
Brown has committed to serve full time with Habitat for Humanity over the next year as an AmeriCorps National in the construction field. She will complete over 1,700 hours during her term of service. Brown relocated from Hoosick Falls. She studied Spanish and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University at Albany.

“I joined AmeriCorps because I wanted to be the change I wanted to see as well as discover a new place within the United States. I love to travel and experience new and different things,” said Brown.
AmeriCorps is a national service program managed by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Habitat for Humanity was one of the first organizations to partner with CNCS when AmeriCorps began in 1994, and this continued partnership has engaged more than 7,000 AmeriCorps members in support of Habitat’s mission and in the cause of adequate and affordable housing.
“Habitat for Humanity has benefited from the dedicated service and tangible impact of AmeriCorps members in many ways,” said Peter Rumsey Jr., Director of National Service at Habitat for Humanity International. “AmeriCorps members help us continually innovate our work in communities. Their impact is tremendous as they help Habitat serve more families.”
Brown and 17 other members serving with Habitat for Humanity of Mississippi Gulf Coast will join a network of more than 500 Habitat AmeriCorps members who are serving in more than 150 communities throughout the United States. Since 2011 AmeriCorps members have served more than 2,400 families, provided more than one million hours of service, mobilized more than 200,000 volunteers and raised millions of dollars in cash and in-kind resources.
Each year, tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members serve with organizations around the country to help meet the needs of local communities. For more information please visit www.habitat.org/americorps or www.americorps.gov.
Habitat for Humanity International is a global nonprofit Christian housing organization that seeks to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.
