The Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park invite neighbors and newcomers to their Annual Dinner Meeting featuring Animal Tracks & Tales, a lecture by local animal tracker Dan Yacobellis of Tamakoce Wilderness Programs. The dinner and lecture will be on Thursday, November 1, at 6 pm at the Grafton Inn, and reservations are required through the Park by calling 279-1155.
Local animal tracker Dan Yacobellis will be showing a slide show of animal sign while discussing the concepts of animal tracking, the joys and excitement it brings and the inner depths tracking can take you to. “Spend a day tracking with me, and you will see the landscape come alive in a whole new way,” said Yacobellis. Applying field observations to local and regional environmental questions is another benefit to having a basic knowledge of tracking. How can you help or hinder animal and plant communities on your property? What are the animals that live around your home and their basic needs? How will that road, culvert or development affect their lives? Lastly, how can tracking apply to our self development and inner growth? Yacobellis will go deep!
Dan Yacobellis is a local, accomplished animal tracker, primitive skills practitioner, wilderness awareness educator and founder of Tamakoce Wilderness Progams. He runs seasonal classes for children and runs many workshops on tracking and primitive living skills throughout the year for all ages. He has been working to get a comprehensive picture of the animal activity on the Rensselaer Plateau and hopes to start spreading out to the larger Capital District area by doing flora and fauna inventories for private and public landholders.
The Friends business meeting and elections will follow the lecture. The Grafton Inn is located on Route 2. The buffet dinner includes coffee and dessert and costs $15 per person. Please call the Park at 279-1155 to RSVP by Tuesday, October 30, as space is limited.
