Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature joined with family, friends and veterans today in dedicating a portion of State Route 7 near the Tomhannock Reservoir in memory of Brigadier General James Kenney.
Kenney served the nation’s military for over 40 years, beginning in the World War II era and continuing through the Cold War until his retirement in 1987. Kenney served with the New York Army National Guard, and then worked for the New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs, ending his service with the Army Reserves.
[private]“James Kenney was an outstanding public servant and patriot, who gave much of his life in service to his country and community. This section of highway will be a memorial to his service and hopefully inspire future generations,” said Vice Chairman of the Legislature Stan Brownell.
Kenney also worked for the State Department of Environmental Conservation. While working for the State, Kenney was a special game coordinator who took particular pride in patrolling the area around the Tomhannock Reservoir.
Kenney also helped in the founding of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad and held a number of positions in local government in Hoosick. Born in 1927, he passed away last July.
Legislation to rename the State Route was introduced by Brownell and Legislator Lester Goodermote and approved by State lawmakers this year.
“Jim Kenney was always there for Hoosick and was especially proud of his military service. He was also enthusiastic about his work with DEC in patrolling the Tomhannock and protecting that important resource. It is indeed appropriate that Jim is being remembered in an area he loved so much,” said Goodermote.
