An unusual video presentation will take place at the Petersburgh Town Hall on Wednesday, November 14, at 7 pm and 8:15 pm, celebrating the artists and dreamers who have settled and worked in the Town for many years.
The little town of Petersburgh, nestled in the hills and mountains of eastern Rensselaer County, has long been known for the rugged beauty of its landscape. What is not so well known is that this setting has, over the years, attracted a unique mix of independent artists and visionaries, individuals who have had a lifelong dream and realized it. With disciplines as diverse as music, painting, master masonry, sculpture, jewelry and metal sculpture, ceramic pottery and more, the arts are thriving in this small village.
The Petersburgh Public Library sought out musician/video artists Barton and Priscilla McLean to develop a project, and, with a Community Arts Grant from the Arts Center of the Capitol Region and funding from the Taconic Corporation in hand, the McLeans developed a concept involving the idea of local creative individuals having a unique dream and realizing it. The idea eventually developed into a 38 minute video called “Peter’s People – Creating the Dream.”
International touring and media artists in their own right, the McLeans chose to highlight not themselves, but the many other talented and successful creative dreamers they found, including a world class bagpiper who founded a school in Petersburgh, a master, award winning stone mason whose unique stone work has graced buildings and landscapes from Atlanta to the Adirondacks, a watercolor artist who appeared in Oprah magazine and has published a definitive book on water coloring and much more. The arresting film score for the video was crafted using actual musical material from the artist musicians featured in the video.
The McLeans will give a brief talk before the video, and will invite questions afterwards. Most of the artists themselves will attend. The complete presentation will last one hour. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.
