The Grafton Historical Society’s October meeting will be held at the Grafton Town Hall on October 17 at 7 pm. Charles Poltenson, Flotilla Commander of United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Crescent, will be providing an overview of the history of the United States Coast Guard and the history and role of the Auxiliary.
The United States Coast Guard is the senior nautical service of the United States at 222 years old. The Auxiliary was formed in 1939 as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve to enhance boating safety. In 1941 at the outset of World War II, the Coast Guard created an active Reserve, and the Auxiliary became the uniformed volunteer arm of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The evening’s program will provide some enlightenment on both the Coast Guard and the Auxiliary.
