Stephentown Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt reported on Tuesday that according to a NYSEG official Stephentown was near the top of the list in Rensselaer County for power outages. Much of that was caused by trees down on Staples Road that brought down power lines and cracked a pole by the Historical Society’s Heritage Center. [private]

Eckhardt said that NYSEG was still assessing the damage and was working to provide a time frame for restoring power. Their aim was to tackle those problems first that would provide the quickest amount of relief to the most people. Eckhardt had heard no reports of any injuries or any severe damage caused by the storm. Trees were down across roads at a number of places around Town and power lines also down at various locations including Calvin Cole Road and Black River Road. There were reports too that parts of both East Road and West Road had been closed for a period of time. But overall, Eckhardt’s assessment was that, “We dodged another bullet.”
Berlin Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger said that a roof was blown off of a mobile home up on the Plank Road near the Rod & Gun Club but aside from that were no other major occurrences during Hurricane Sandy. He was aware that there was a fatal accident in Center Berlin early Tuesday morning but State Police were saying that there was no indication it was caused by the weather. He was unaware of any other injuries or any other structural damage Some 254 homes, however, were still without power on Tuesday afternoon. A number of trees were down around Town. One of those on the Plank Road took out a primary power line which caused most of the power outage. There were also trees down on Taborton Road, Stage Coach Road and Bly Hollow Road, all of which the Highway Department promptly attended to.
