The Poestenkill Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, November 27, at 7 pm in the Poestenkill Town Hall (Rte. 351). This November’s program will feature Mark Bodner as guest speaker. Bodner has done much historical research on the Dunn Memorial Bridge, officially known as the Private Parker F. Dunn Memorial Bridge.
Private Parker F. Dunn was an Albany native who served in the United States army during World War I. Private Dunn was killed when he volunteered for an extremely dangerous mission. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service beyond the call of duty.
The Dunn Memorial Bridge is one of several bridges to cross the Hudson river at Albany. Construction was completed in 1967 to replace an earlier span bearing the same name. Daily traffic on the Dunn Bridge, which carries 8 lanes of US9/US20, is 36,000 vehicles. Peregrine falcons have been observed nesting under the roadway since 1998.
If you have traveled on the Dunn Memorial Bridge, this program will be interesting because Bodner will discuss how the bridge was designed and the changes that were made to it.
All Poestenkill Historical Society programs are free, and the public is welcome. Refreshments will be provided. The book, Images of America, Poestenkill, can be purchased at this program or at the Poestenkill Library or at the Historian’s office in the Town Hall. Regularly $22, it is now on sale for $16 during the holiday shopping season.
