Berlin Students In The Green Mountain Youth Orchestra

January 25, 2013 By eastwickpress

submitted by Jen Burhans
The Green Mountain Youth Orchestra combined with The Lakes Region Youth Orchestra to present a ” Night At The Movies” concert under the direction of Ellen Sager. Five students from Berlin auditioned and were selected for the GMYO for the 2012-2013 season. Once a year the two youth orchestras combine and present a series of concerts throughout the day for area school children from the three surrounding states. The orchestras finished the day with an evening performance for the public.

This year the fourth and fifth grade classes from Berlin Elementary School were able to travel to Mt. Anthony High School to attend one of the concerts. After the concert the children were able to ask questions of the orchestra and get an up close view of all the parts that make up an orchestra. Knowing some of the musicians was an added bonus and hopefully inspired some of the kids to continue on with their musical studies.
Jackson Burhans is the first chair French horn player and has been with the GMYO for four years. Rebecca Olsen is the first chair oboe, and her sister Emily plays the flute. They have been members of the GMYO for three years. Tim Shupe played trombone and his sister, Christina Shupe, played the clarinet in their first year as GMYO members.
The Spring season will be starting for the GMYO this week. Any musician who would like to try out for the GMYO can contact Jen Burhans for information. Practices are held evenings at Mt. Anthony HS.
