Hoosick Falls Village Election Is Tuesday

March 15, 2013 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
Every vote is important in an election. And when the candidates are running unopposed, as is the case in Hoosick Falls next week, every vote is still very important. When individuals volunteer to devote hours of their time, for a stipend, for the betterment of their community, they deserve the support of that community. Casting a vote for them on Tuesday is a show of  support for them. All ballots will be cast in the Municipal Building on Main Street from noon until 9 pm on March 19.
[private]Mayor Matthew Monahan and Deputy Mayor Paul Haynes are not running for re-election. Trustee John “Ersel” Hickey recently passed away. He was a candidate for re-election.
For Mayor
Trustee David B. Borge is the Village’s mayoral candidate. Borge was appointed to the Board in June 2011 to replace Trustee Michael Hickey who moved two houses out of the Village. Borge ran unopposed for the seat and was elected to the Board in 2012.
Borge and his wife Kathleen live on Wilder Avenue. They moved to Hoosick Falls in 1985. They have three sons and five grandchildren. Borge retired from the State of New York after 30 years. In his last job he oversaw the Disabilities Division. Later he worked as Director of an agency that provided services for people with traumatic brain injuries, and until last September he worked with a program for training those with brain injuries.
Borge began attending Village Board meetings when he had an issue to bring before them. Once that was resolved he continued to attend the meetings. “It appealed to me,” he said. “Watching people who did not have an axe to grind but wanted to do the right thing. It was very interesting. They are good folks; the Board, the staff.” When the time came, he was happy to join them. Since he has been on the Board Borge’s focus has been on Code Enforcement, which he wants to see be more “user friendly,” noting the phenomenal job being done by Building Inspector Ed Holland. Recently he undertook a successful study of solar power to reduce the Village’s energy cost. Solar panels will soon be in place at the Water Plant and the Waste Water Treatment Plant. One of several future goals is changes and improvements in the Village’s zoning regulations.
For Trustee
Trustee Riccardo A. (Ric) DiDonato is running unopposed for a fourth term.
Robert H. Ryan and Kevin F. O’Malley, both staples on the Hoosick Town Board for many years, are running unopposed for the positions of Village Trustees.
After the election another Trustee will be appointed to replace Borge. That will place three new Trustees on the Board.[/private]
