Berlin – John Allan O’Dell of Brookside Park, Berlin, NY, entered into Eternal Rest on Tuesday evening April 9, 2013, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, NY.
Born March 10, 1931, at Leonard Hospital in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late John H. and Lillian Hull O’Dell. John attended Berlin schools. After completing his education he proudly served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1961. After his military service John worked for W. J. Cowee, the Rensselaer County Highway Dept., William E. Daley Concrete Co. and “Green Thumb” at the Grafton Lakes State Park. John married the love of his life and lifelong best friend, M. Patricia (Pat) Hyman, on November 24, 1949. Together they raised their four children. He is pre-deceased by their son, John Michael O’Dell, who died on August 28, 1996, a sister, Charlotte O. Johnson, and by his beloved wife Pat, who died on January 23, 2010.
He is survived by their children, James Robert and wife Helene O’Dell of Northfield, VT, Anita O’Dell of Berlin and Carol Salvi of Bennington, VT, a sister, Jean L. and husband Peter Baretsky of Dannemora, NY, grandchildren, Jessica and husband Mike Crowe of Berlin, Jay and wife Erica Jones of Brunswick, NY, Kayla Denue of Pownal, VT, Jenna Grover of Bennington, VT, James O’Dell II and Salina O’Dell of Northfield, VT, six great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. John was also overjoyed to know that two more great-grandchildren will be born within the next few months.
John was devoted to his country and his family. He was proud of his military service and ceaselessly continued to care for his family until his recent illness. He now rejoins his beloved Pat and rests knowing he was the inspiration for his whole family.
Family and friends were invited for visitation on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, from noon until 2 pm in the First Baptist Church of Berlin on Main Street. A Memorial Service began at 2 pm with Pastor Peter Seide officiating. Inurnment with full military honors followed in the Berlin Baptist Cemetery in Center Berlin. A time of fellowship followed in the Church hall. Those wishing to honor John’s memory made contributions to the family at the services.
