Carl Winterstein

May 3, 2013 By eastwickpress

New Lebanon – Carl “Freddie” Winterstein died suddenly but peacefully at the age of 82 on January 15, 2013, after more than 25 years of happy retirement in the home his parents built more than 50 years ago.
ob-CarlFWintersteinBorn August 9, 1930, and raised on Long Island, NY, Carl served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, which led to a 30+ year career with Grumman Aerospace as an aeronautical engineer. He earned his B.S. degree from C.W. Post University (now Long Island University) while being a dedicated father to his five children. Carl was an active Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader for years as well as an avid blood donor.
Upon his retirement from Grumman in 1987, Carl moved to his parent’s house in New Lebanon, NY, where he enjoyed gardening, family visits, the beauty of the valley and a dry gin martini. In later years he became especially fond of horse racing, including an annual pilgrimage to Saratoga, and playing Skat with family and friends. He was a voracious reader and was intellectually curious throughout his life. The playful gleam in his eye and his ready humor will be missed by all those fortunate enough to have known him.
Carl is survived by three sisters, five children and two in-laws, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to an inurnment service of Carl’s remains at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at 11 am on Tuesday, May 26. Please arrive by 10:45 at the reception area.
Carl’s family extends a special thanks to Nancy and Bill Zimmerman for more than 25 years of devoted friendship with our father.
Arrangements are under the guidance of the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home of Stephentown, NY.
