Eighty-seven years ago a group of Hoosick Falls guys who hung around the American House bet on the Kentucky Derby. Lo and behold they won! The next question was what to do with the winnings. And the Derby Community Club, a not-for-profit organization, was formed. That race money and other contributions is the basis for the support still offered local organizations and individuals today. [private]On Friday evening, May 3, the Derby Community Club held its 87th Anniversary Party at the Polish Hall. There was plenty of food, Kentucky Derby type drinks and fantastic music by Three’s Harmony.
The fund raising portion of the evening included a 50/50 raffle and Chinese Auction items and gift certificates. In a show of support to the many local businesses that are annually bombarded with requests for complimentary certificates, the majority of Chinese Auction certificates were purchased either by the Derby Club or Derby Club officer Joanie James. Carmody’s and The Public House donated their certificates. Other items were donated as well. It was a fun evening as everyone hoped his or her number would be drawn for one of the items. Some folks won more than one prize, while others went home happy with the evening, but empty handed. The event raised $1,000 for the Derby Community Club.
