The boys lacrosse team continues to struggle as the mid-season games come and go. Last Thursday, the team traveled to Maple Hill High, which is the high school for the southern Rensselaer County Schodack Central School District. The Panthers ended up being outscored in the game 15-3. Matt Sprague tallied two goals, and Nick Schrom scored one. Chris Schielding had twelve saves in goal.
On Tuesday, the team faced Greenwich (3-5) on the Hoosac School field, which is the team’s home field. The Panthers played competitively in the first half, being down 4-2 at that point of the contest. The Witches’ better play allowed them to pull away in the second half and come away with an 11-4 victory. Noah Labarge had two goals, with Matt Sprague and Josh Nixon each contributing one. The Panthers now fall to 0-8.
This is an enjoyable sport to watch, with continuous action. A high school boys game consists of 4 quarters, each 12 minutes long. The teams change sides after each quarter. There are ten players on a team – the goalie, three defensemen, three midfielders and three attackmen. Only three players, the midfielders, are allowed to roam the entire field. The boys game allows far more contact than the girls. In the boys game, a player committing a penalty is required to sit out for an amount of time determined by a referee, and the game continues without the player.
This week the Panther boys lacrosse team plays on Thursday, May 2, at Lansingburgh (4:15 pm) and on Friday, May 3, home against Cambridge (5 pm). Home games are played at Hoosac School.
