Months of research and organizing went into the “Memorial Day – A Local Tribute” sponsored by Voice of a Vet and Heroes at Home at the HAYC3 Armory on Saturday, May 18. Spearheading the efforts were Gail Smith and Howie Wright. Much of the research was done by Tom McMartin and Charles Filkins.
[private]The event, held on Armed Forces Day, included military historical exhibits from the Louis Miller Museum, tables with representatives offering valuable information to veterans and American Legion Post 40 and the Auxiliary eager to recruit new members. There were moving films of overseas cemeteries holding thousands of American soldiers and much more.
NYS Senator Kathy Marchione participated in the event. Veteran George Christian, representing Congressman Chris Gibson’s office, spoke and presented Wright with a flag that had flown over the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. Families of Hoosick servicemen who had been lost in battle each had an opportunity at the gathering to hold the flag. Christian said he had recently found a list of all those who served in the military in New York State by County. He said he was pleased to spend time in Hoosick Falls acknowledging those who served so willingly. He asked everyone to think of their sacrifice and know that they “made our country what it is today.” Christian served in the military for 20 years.

In the afternoon several Hoosick Falls and North Hoosick firefighters lined the road as everyone walked to Wood Memorial Park where the new flag was raised and placed at half staff in remembrance. Shari Hand moved those attending with her beautiful a cappella singing of hymns and patriotic songs. Hoosick Falls Mayor David Borge read the names of all those from Hoosick lost in the Civil War. Hoosick Town Supervisor Keith Cipperly read the names of those lost in WW I and Rensselaer County Legislator Stan Brownell read the names of those lost in WW II. A salute was fired and taps was played. Benediction was given by Rev. Dale Hall of the Hoosick Baptist Church.
It was a wonderful tribute to local veterans and a credit to everyone who put so much thought and effort into such a day.
