The first Ray L. Darling Sr. Memorial Arm Wrestling Competition has been scheduled on Ray’s birthday, Saturday, May 11, at the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Hall at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown.
[private]Ray was an 11 time World Champion Arm Wrestler who recently died on February 22, 2013. For the past several years he sponsored arm wrestling competitions in Stephentown to support the Gardner-Carelli Memorial Scholarship Fund. There will be adult and children competitions.
Ray was an avid supporter of his community and the sport of arm wrestling. He travelled the United States and the world as an ambassador for the sport.
As an active community supporter he was instrumental in the creation of Grafton’s Blueberry Festival, which continues to be a part of Grafton’s Summer Festival. He was proud of his contributions in the various celebrations and parades he helped to organize and to actively participate in.
He saw things that needed to be changed and was willing to run for the office of Supervisor of the Town of Grafton to get these changes implemented. Ray died while serving as Supervisor of the Town of Grafton.
This competition combines two of these things that Ray loved, the sport of arm wrestling and helping others.
All of the proceeds of the day will be utilized to benefit the American Heart Association.
In addition to arm wrestling there will also be a silent auction, raffles, food and festivities all day from 12:30 to 6 pm.
