Boy Scout Troop 222 Has Had An Active Spring

June 7, 2013 By eastwickpress

submitted by Andrew Zlotnik
Troop 222 has been working hard and playing even harder. The Troop helped out at the PVMCC with a lasagna dinner fundraiser for the Veterans Wall of Honor. The Troop recognized their scouts with a Court of Honor for the scouts who advanced in rank. The Scouts helped clean up the Garfield Cemetery in Petersburgh and placed flags at the graves of our fallen service men and women for Memorial Day. Some of the scouts in Troop 222 even found time to earn a Space Exploration Merit Badge.
Spring Camporee
The Troop also had a lot of fun at this year’s Spring Camporee. The Troop traveled about 75 miles to Johnstown, NY, to attend the Sir William Johnson District Mountain Man Camporee at the Woodworth Lake Scout Reservation. The Troop camped from Friday to Sunday in a beautiful lakeside camp site. The Scouts participated in outdoor activities like flint & steel fire starting, log sawing, tomahawk throwing, rowboat racing, orienteering, fire and knife safety, trapping and hide tanning, branding and fishing. The Troop was

awarded third place in flint & steel fire starting with a time under 3 minutes to get a fire started. They also took second place in the rowboat race. Scouts had a chance to hone their cooking and camping skills while at the Camporee. The Troop’s Scout, Trevar Hall, was able to participate in a solemn flag retirement ceremony at the camp where the flag was properly retired through burning. Recently the Woodworth Lake Scout Reservation was sold, and this brought special meaning to all the scouts who attended this “Last Rendezvous.” Scouts also found time to build campfires, play cards, go fishing and cook two meals. They camped in tents.
Donors Needed
The Troop is looking for donors to help out with the purchase of a tow behind trailer for all the Troop’s scout gear. The expected cost is around $2k to cover all the costs. If anyone could, help donations can be sent to the PVMCC in care of Troop 222 Trailer Fund at 71 Main Street, Petersburgh, NY, 12138. Please help the Troop reach its goal. Corporate sponsorship is welcomed. You can also contact Jim Akers Scout Master at 728-0352.
