The Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777, will be commemorated at the New York State Bennington Battlefield Historic Site on Friday, August 16, starting at 7 pm. The ceremony will be conducted by members of Chapters of the Empire State Society Sons of the American Revolution, The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and other local historical groups in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. [private]The commemoration includes a wreath laying and a salute with a blackpowder cannon modeled on one from the Revolutionary War.
The commemoration will continue on Saturday, the 17th, with a display of artwork and other material related to the American Revolution by members of the Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution from 10 am to 5 pm. Local interpreter Phyllis Chapman will also be present in period costume, sharing history and remarkable tales from the Revolutionary era. Children will enjoy an interactive exhibit of games that children played in the 1770s.
The Battlefield is located on NYS Route 67 approximately three miles east of the intersection of NYS Routes 67 and 22 in North Hoosick.
The Battle of Bennington was fought in what was then the area of Walloomsac, NY, and was a significant victory for American forces. It paved the way for the important American victory in the Battle of Saratoga in October of that year.
The Battlefield site offers information about the Battle and wonderful views of the surrounding area. It is open to the public at no charge.[/private]
