Berlin Carnival And Community Days

August 30, 2013 By eastwickpress

No doubt, Friday afternoon and evening was the busiest time at the Carnival and Community Days sponsored by the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company last Friday and Saturday.
[private]The Rensselaer County Law Enforcement Association in conjunction with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, who check children’s car seats, were pleased to have fixed improperly installed seats. A County person said about 90 percent of the seats they inspected were incorrectly installed. That’s a big group of youngsters that are now a lot safer riding in family cars.
Joe Shaw provided musical entertainment Friday evening and the concession stands were going great guns. According to Fire Company President Bruce Hake the Company ran out of clams and corn. “We had to buy more for Saturday,” he said. At the end of the evening the Rescue Squad had only four blooming onions left. “This was a community outreach event, and we feel the community enjoyed it,” said Hake. There were rides for the kids, the bullet ride for the bold and lots of community not-for-profits to support.
Another big hit was the Rensselaer County Safety House. “We must have had fifty kids go through it,” said Hake. “They were from all over, Guilderland, Washington, MA, and throughout the area.”
Hake said the Company is pleased overall with the event. “Folks loved the circus, too,” he said, but the circus no longer visits New York State. However, Hake said, the Fire Company will definitely do a similar event either next year or the year after. “It was a perfect time to have it,” he said. “There were no other events happening close by, and it was a treat for the kids before school starts,” Hake added.

Members of the Berlin Rescue Squad and the Berlin Fire Department were kept busy Friday evening selling blooming onions, fried dough, corn on the cob and clams. The demand was so great that more clams and corn had to be bought on Saturday. (Bea Peterson photo)
