The parking lot at Hoosick Falls Central School was filled to overflowing with cars Tuesday evening, September 3. The girls soccer team was playing its first game of the season under the lights, and it was Meet the Teacher evening for youngsters entering pre-K through second grade. [private]Families, with students in tow, crowded the classrooms. All the rooms looked bright and cheerful and parents, students and teachers alike appeared ready for the school year to begin.

Outdoors youngsters boarded school buses for the first time. At the parking lot of the bus garage HFCS Transportation Supervisor Joe Steller worked with the little guys on how to exit the bus. “Watch for the signal from the bus driver,” he told them. “Wait, then look left and right (to make sure no car is coming), then cross the street.” Some youngsters grasped the procedure quickly, while other appeared a little baffled by the whole experience. Steller said this is the best day of the school year for him. “We plant the seed, and hopefully it will grow,” he said.
Undoubtedly parents and seasoned bus riders were on hand when they boarded their buses for the first day of school. That and what they learned on Tuesday will, one hopes, guide them through a safe school year.
Tuesday and Wednesday were Superintendent Conference Days for the teachers. Classes began on Thursday.
