The Korean War, often referred to as “the forgotten war,” was a bitter three year hard fought struggle that came to a precarious end 60 years ago. Fittingly, the Veterans of the Stephentown Area decided to focus on the veterans of the Korean War era in their Veterans Day ceremonies this year. The event was held in Veterans Park on Saturday morning, November 9.
[private]In a gesture that everyone found very touching, a group of six Korean students from the Hoosac School arrived from Hoosick to thank the veterans for the service rendered to their country. The students came bearing red carnations which each of them presented personally to each of the Korean War veterans. According to Tom Cochran, Dean of Students, these students come from all parts of Korea. “Their presence has obviously given Hoosac School a strong international flavor, which we embrace as a very positive thing. We have developed a very close and lasting relationship with many families in Korea,” Cochran said.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, an invocation by Pastor Al Wolcott and singing of the “Star Spangled Banner,” also by Al Wolcott, John DeFreest, President of the Stephentown Veterans, welcomed all attending and introduced the Korean War era veterans. Although the War ended with a cease fire on July 27, 1953, Congress has designated the official Korean War Era to extend to January 31, 1955. Twenty-six members of the Stephentown Veterans organization served during that period. Thirteen were present, six were unable to be present and seven are deceased. As far as can be determined, there are another 31 residents of Stephentown living and deceased who also served during that era.

Mike Brown did the honors as master of ceremonies for the event. Guest speakers included NY State Senator Kathleen Marchione, County Legislator Stan Brownell, Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino and Stephentown Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt.

The Korean War Era veterans each received certificates of commendation presented personally by both Senator Marchione and by County Executive Jimino.
Following the ceremonies all present were invited to the Stephentown Fire Hall for an excellent luncheon catered by the Lakeview Restaurant in Averill Park.
