Mr. Robert C. Miller, retired seventh grade English teacher, did an annual project with his students for many years. Students would write letters to famous people telling them about the project and requesting an autographed photo. The purpose of the project was to teach students how to write letters. Hundreds of letters were written over the years, and, as a result, by the time Mr. Miller retired there were over 300 pictures, autographed magazines and letters adorning the walls of his classroom. [private]Mr. Miller left them to his last seventh grade English students, the Class of 2014. Now that they will be graduating in June, they have decided to sell the pictures and magazines in order to use the money to create a scholarship in Mr. Miller’s name to honor him for all his years of dedicated service to the School District.
You may have seen the students at different events with tables covered in autographed pictures, and you may have even already bought one or two, but there are still so many in need of good homes. Some of the people that have bought pictures have done so because they remember the writing project or because it was the picture they sat near during their time in Mr. Miller’s classroom.
On Friday, December 13, from 5 to 8 pm the Class of 2014 is hosting the annual Shop on the Avenue at the MS/HS and they will have the pictures and magazines on sale at the event. Among the autographed photos are 188 actors, including Woody Allen, Lauren Bacall, Carol Burnett, Tom Cruise, Michael Douglas, Jane Fonda, Whoopie Goldberg and Sally Field, 47 athletes, including Peggy Fleming, Billy Jean King, Greg LeMond and Bobby Nichols, 32 vocalists, including Garth Brooks, Ray Charles, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie and Dean Martin, six comedians, including Jay Leno, Bob Newhart and Paula Poundstone and a large assortment of astronauts, business tycoons, writers, cartoonists, musicians, newscasters, movie directors, magicians and politicians.
