Hoosick Falls Drug Bust

by Bea Peterson

On Sunday, December 29, a Hoosick Falls Police patrol made a traffic stop on Mechanic Street. According to the Police report, “during the course of the investigation it was determined that the driver at the time was an unlicensed driver and further investigation determined that prior to the stop another individual was driving.” [private]This all led to a call to Police Chief Robert Ashe who then called in Mickey, the Department’s 19 month old black lab in training to find drugs and his handler Officer Crystalee Quell. Mickey, on his first case, found that a passenger in the vehicle was in possession of heroin. His further search of the vehicle, the suspect and the surrounding area resulted in the seizure of 101 glassine envelopes, some containing a yellowish powder that tested positive for heroin. Drug paraphernalia was also found.

Arrested was 25 year old Nicole M. Shores of 4322 U.S. Rt. 7, South Wallingford, VT, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and  Tampering with Physical Evidence.

A second subject, a 16 year old of 46 Pageant Street, Bennington, VT, was arrested for False Impersonation as well as Driving While Suspended, and it was discovered that he was a runaway and was wanted in Vermont for other charges.

Shores was arraigned and remanded to Rensselaer County Jail in lieu of $10,000 Bail. The youth was arraigned and remanded to the County Jail in lieu of $1,000 Bail.

The individuals had been in Hoosick Falls looking for an apartment.

“Mickey and Crystal did a great job on their first assignment,” said Chief Ashe. He said there are a lot of transients that come through the Village, “bringing their activities with them. They come from Vermont and go through the Village or come from Troy and go through the Village. We have a problem here just like everyone else. At the moment heroin seems to be the drug of choice; it’s cheap and a quick fix.”

“They know we’re here,” the Chief added. “They go as far as they can, and they leave. By the time we get the warrants, they’re gone.”

“Already Mickey is paying dividends,” said the Chief. “I’m happy with the way he is proceeding, and we’ll be using him more and more.”[/private]
