Duane and Betsy Greenawalt, owners of the Hathaway’s Drive-In in North Hoosick, were busy Saturday selling tee and sweatshirts, movie posters, drive-in speakers and cotton candy at the Minks to Sinks Tag Sale at the Armory.
Duane said he is cautiously optimistic they will raise the $70,000 necessary to purchase the digital equipment they need to keep the drive-in open. [private]”Every purchase puts us closer,” he said. “I just don’t know when we’ll get there.”
The black, glow in the dark shirts proclaim that in its 66th year Hathaway’s Drive-In will be a digital cinema.
Honda Contest

Duane said the nationwide Honda contest that had people voting to save their favorite drive-in on the internet for a month was “invaluable.” “Too bad it was a foreign car company that did it,” he said. “But I applaud them for making the connection between cars and drive-ins.” He said it was a great contest, but it was tough for any of the small rural drive-ins to compete against drive-ins near metropolitan areas.
Duane said there are only 320 drive-ins left in the country. About 75 percent of them are in Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio. Those states are number one, two and three with the number of drive-ins they have.

On the evening of Hoosipalooza 3 there will be a benefit for Hathaway’s Drive-In Theatre at the Armory called “A Night at the Brewvies.” It’s 21+ and features Brown’s Brewing.[/private]
