by David Flint
Stephentown Town Historian Pat Flint put together a slide show of local people, “Notable Locals” she called it, which she presented at the monthly meeting of the Stephentown Historical Society on Monday evening at the Heritage Center. [private]

Among the notables were some WW II and Korean War veterans, a selection of Town officials past and present and a number of persons who figured in some way in the Town’s history. Another large group was composed of a mix of well known characters still to be seen around Town.
For most of the present day residents Flint had pictures from years ago as well as more current photos. The audience had an amusing time trying to guess from a childhood or young adult photo who that person was. For the most part they did a much better job than was expected. Usually someone in the group was able to identify the subject before the contemporary picture was shown. Audience participation was high as the pictures provoked many memories of friends and neighbors past and present.
Town officials pictured included Gus Johnson, Clarence Carpenter, Al Silvernail, John Esposito, Pat Mohos, Cyril Grant and Wes Edwards. Among the historical figures were Civil War veteran Andrew Hamilton Doty, Dr. Antoinette Russell, one of the first American women physicians, Pittsburgh Pirates ace relief pitcher Elroy Face, Chevrolet dealer Ernest McClintock, Avery Hall, founder of Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, and William Lapp, who owned a carriage shop where the Town Hall now stands.
