Cherry Plain – Leo L. Goodermote, 83, longtime dairy farmer, died suddenly on Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. Born in Cherry Plain, NY, on February 22, 1931, he was the son of the late Lewis and Addie Carr Goodermote. A lifelong resident of Cherry Plain, Mr. Goodermote attended Berlin Schools and was employed for a short period by the Rutland Railroad and Jack Sweeney Construction. He was a self-employed dairy farmer on his farm, Bly Hollow Farm, in Cherry Plain for over 60 years.
He served on the Berlin Town Board as an assessor and councilman and was a member of the Center Berlin Cemetery Committee. He was very active in the Rensselaer County Agricultural Committee. He was a member of the Cherry Plain Community Christian Church. He was involved in pony pulls at the County fairs and always was accompanied in his truck and tractor by his faithful dog, Susie.
He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley M. Brimmer Goodermote, who died in 1971, and Shirley M. Adams Goodermote, who died in 2002, the loving father of Donna and husband Arthur Schmich of Stephentown, NY, Douglas A. and wife Melinda Goodermote of Cherry Plain, Debra and husband Thomas Hanson of Nassau, NY, Sally and husband David Maxon of Laurens, SC, Karen and husband Dale Dunton of Clinton, SC, Wanda and husband Jim Duval of Canon City, CO, Norma and husband Ralph Cipperly of Hoosick Falls, NY, Wayne Richard and wife Cindy Lohnes of Virginia Beach, VA, Donald P. Lohnes and Mary Ann Shaw both of Canon City and Donna and husband Dean Maxon of Berlin, NY, the loving brother of Luella Hoffman and Elmer and wife Sylvia Goodermote, all of Cherry Plain, Margaret and husband Henry Tanner of Center Berlin, NY, Lewis and wife Connie Goodermote, Shirley and husband Bob Oswald and Joyce Goodermote, all of Cherry Plain, and the late Lloyd “Toby” Goodermote, Loretta “Myrt” Taylor and Mary Jean Brazie. Leo is also survived by 30 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service is Friday, March 7, at 1 pm at the Cherry Plain Community Christian Church in Cherry Plain. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Church prior to the service from 11 am to 1 pm. Interment will follow in the Center Berlin Cemetery.
