North Petersburgh Aerie Family

April 18, 2014 By eastwickpress

These two American bald eagles, Fred (left), male, and female Wilma, have set up housekeeping again this year in a five foot wide nest in North Petersburgh. They have been there since early spring. Wilma is in the nest all the time, probably taking care of eggs, although by this time there may be eaglets in the nest. Fred is out hunting most of the time and is allowed on the nest only long enough to drop off his catch. Sometimes he continues hunting and other times he goes to a nearby tree limb and roosts. Normally, a female lays one to three eggs, separated by days, and the eggs hatch in the order in which they were laid. At eight weeks, an eaglet will be almost as large as its parents.
