Spring Turkey Season Opens May 1

April 25, 2014 By eastwickpress

These two turkeys were strutting their stuff late Tuesday afternoon in the White Creek area. Turkey season opens May 1 in New York State and continues through May 31. Hunters are allowed to take two bearded turkeys total during the month, with a limit of one per day. A beard is a modified feather that hangs down from the turkey’s chest. Up to nine inch beards are common, although the longest is 18 inches. Males always have a beard, and females occasionally do. Male turkeys also have spurs, which are spike-like projections on their legs. From the number of turkeys seen in the fields, it should be a productive season. (Steve Bradley photo)
