Boy Scout Troop 222 from Petersburgh participated in the Mahikan District Spring Camporee and I Love My Parks Day, May 2 to 4, at the Schodack Island State Park along the Hudson River.
The Troop was one of 18 Boy Scout Troops that gathered together to have some good clean scouting fun, clean up the park and do a little overnight camping over the weekend. The scouts and adult leaders from the Troop worked on a service project to beautify the flower gardens in the park. The boys found time to have a lot of fun with the other scouts who attended the Camporee.
The Camporee was built around a service to the community, and there were Olympic-themed events during the day. The troop competed both as individuals and teams in different events to acquire points that would determine their final standings. Although the Troop did not finish in the top three, success was won in different events. First Class Scout Henry Ruebel won the two man tug of war, CJ Bortnick came in second in the checkers tournament and Michael Zlotnick came in second in the chess tournament. All the boys had the opportunity to compete in games like the fly ball catch, Horse and Rider, the memory game almost as old as scouting called Kim’s Game, and the Troop also got to build and launch a soda bottle rocket powered by water and compressed air. The Troop would like to thank Green Renewables in Berlin for the donation of Burn Rite firewood which made for a real warm end to the cool evening at the State Park.
