May 30, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Jen Burhans

The Berlin track team competed at U. Albany on May 24 at the Section II Class 5 Championship. The girls placed 11th.

Berlin did well individually. Alex Flowers, a freshman, did very well at his first Sectionals earning a fourth place finish in the pole vault and a ninth place in the 400 meters. Jackson Burhans was eighth in the pole vault, and Evan Dawes earned 13th in the discus. Nick Styers, an eighth-grader, was 12th in the 3,200 run. Meygan Delevan ran to a second place finish in the 100 hurdles and an 11th in the 100 meters. Laura Ryder was the big winner for Berlin grabbing first place in the discus.

Two Go To State Qualifiers

By placing in the top three finishers Laura and Meygan received sectional patches and earned the right to go to the Section II State Qualifying meet on May 30 at SUNY Albany. At this meet the schools are divided into two divisions. Schools with 600 students and up are D I and those with 599 and below are D 2. Only the winners in each division are advanced to the State Championships the following week. In past years Berlin has sent athletes to compete in the State Championship but not very often. The qualifier’s competition is held over two days, May 29 and 30 and it starts at 4 pm both days. The entry cost is $6. Both Laura and Meygan will be giving it the best shots to continue on to the next level of competition.
