Petersburgh – Nathan Andrew Winters, 34, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY, due to injuries sustained in an ATV accident on his farm in Petersburgh, NY. Born in Lancaster, PA, on November 16, 1979, he is the loving son of Grace Fuller VanWinkle and stepson of Eric VanWinkle of Lebanon, PA, and the late LeeRoy Winters. He was a graduate of Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.
Following school, Nathan moved to California where he was employed as a programmer and developed websites; he later lived in Colorado. From May 9 to October 4, 2009, he rode his bike across the U.S. from Belfast, ME, to Bellingham, WA. He wrote a blog called “FollowNathan.org” of his experience meeting new friends and visiting farms, breweries and small towns along the way.
Nathan’s dream was to be a farmer, and he moved to Vermont and operated a farm in Wilmington, VT. In 2013, he married his beloved wife Eliza and moved to Petersburgh to operate her family farm, Hill Hollow Farm. Nathan was a freelance writer and wrote articles for Grit Magazine and was an avid football fan of the Denver Broncos.
In addition to his mother and stepfather, Nathan is the loving husband of Eliza Lamphere Winters, proud father of his precious 13 month old daughter, Mathilda Marie Winters, and of a child due on September 28, brother of Samantha VanWinkle and uncle of Hunter Ruhl, both of Lebanon, PA, and son-in-law of Terry and Nancy Lamphere of Petersburgh.
The funeral service will be Sunday, May 4, at 1 pm at the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh. Interment will follow in the family cemetery at Hill Hollow Farm in Petersburgh. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 4 to 8 pm.
