Libby Cass of Stephentown was awarded the highest honor in girl scouting, the Gold Award, last month for her work with the Town of Stephentown and the Stephentown Memorial Library to add science, engineering and collaboration with local professionals programming to the Town’s summer youth day camp program.

Cass developed working agreements with local artists, environmental groups such as the Wyomonack Center, science learning institutions such as Tech Valley High and the Darrow School and local athletes to introduce concepts in science, the arts and physical education through fun and exciting learning experiences. The program initiated as a pilot last year now forms the basis of the summer camp’s activities, combining play, physical activity and exploration of the world.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is equivalent to the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouting.
Cass graduated from Tech Valley High School this June and plans to attend New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering. She is the recipient of the Rensselaer Medal, the CASDA Scholars Recognition Award, The Society of Women Engineer’s Recognition Award, the China – US People’s Committee Award for Advancement of Cultural Relationships and the Yoshimura Award for Leadership and Academic Excellence.
