Sunday, June 22, was another sunny, early summer day in Stephentown, an ideal day for the Stephentown Historical Society’s 33rd annual Strawberry Festival at the Berry Patch. Bev McClave and her crew served some 225 people on a pace to set attendance and sales records. Unfortunately they ran out of strawberries shortly after 2 o’clock. A paucity of pickers and hullers had left the inventory well below average, so latecomers were left disappointed.
The reputation of the Historical Society’s Strawberry Festival has grown over the years, and attendance and expectations have also grown. Unfortunately, picking and hulling crews have not kept pace, so 140 pounds of strawberries could not keep pace with expectations this year.
The Stephentown Historical Society wishes to express a sincere Thank You to the residents and visitors who stopped by the Berry Patch to enjoy shortcake, ice cream and pie while it lasted. We also apologize to afternoon guests who were left a bit hungry when we ran out of strawberries. Thanks also to the pickers, hullers, servers and other contributors who worked at the 33rd annual Strawberry Festival and to Stewart’s Shops and Price Chopper for their contributions to the cause.
