August 15, 2014 By eastwickpress

submitted by Liz Wagner, Park Naturalist

Sunshine and beautiful weather greeted this year’s participants for the 29th Annual Run for the Roses. The Grafton Community Library and Grafton Lakes State Park were happy to host 154 runners for this year’s event on the 5k course that is renowned for being “up hill the whole way.”

[private]First place finishers were 23 year old Demetri Goutes of Saratoga Springs with a time of 16:11 and Payton Czupil, just 15 years old, of Watervliet with a time of 20:40.

The Fun Run participants ran a full mile for their course, with all twenty children pulling through to the finish. The youngest runner was a self-proclaimed “3 point 5 years old!” Notably, the oldest runner in the 5k race was 84 years old!

Twenty-one hikers also supported the Library by making a donation for a nature walk around Shaver Pond led by Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park President Dorothy Surprise.
