The Petersburgh Youth Program ended on Friday, August 4. Many new, younger children attended this year making for a very high, energetic atmosphere.
The first three weeks involved a busy recreational program for 37 youth participants, this year slightly exceeding the typical previous years of 28 to 35 enrollees. [private]Recreational activities including crafts, games and library programs were completed and transitioned by four different age groups of children throughout the day. A counselor and counselor-in-training supervised by an on site director were provided for each group as required by County/State regulations. Lunch, snack and arrival/departure times were enjoyed as a large group. Free lunches were applied for and granted for June 30 – July 25; originally the program was planned for this four week period with the last week being field trips until the swim lessons were negotiated.

Swimming lessons were negotiated at the last minute with Grafton Lakes State Park for the remaining two weeks of the program. It was made possible by a Learn to Swim New York State Parks initiative and grant. A total of 25 children successfully completed their appropriate age/skill level swim instruction. On the last day, the swim instructors rewarded the lively bunch with printed towels for their participation. A parent graciously supplied and served delicious cupcakes and drinks for an ending celebration as well.
Program Director Cindi Mars said, “This year’s Petersburgh Recreation and Swim Program has been such a success due to the collaboration of many community supports.” Financially the program was assisted by the fundraising efforts of the PVMCC, along with group donations from the Petersburgh Seniors/Veterans and many individual donations and support. The Petersburgh Library and Youth Program collaborated to allow a full range of age appropriate reading and educational related activities. The Petersburgh Baptist Church permitted the program to use its yard for outside activities, as placement of the new solar panels prohibited the usual space.
An enormous card was made and placed on display in the Petersburgh Library thanking the many community hands that came together and aided in continuing the valuable program. It displays the many activities and memorable experiences the children enjoyed while attending the program.
