Completion Date Set For June 1
by Bea Peterson
At a special Town of Hoosick Board meeting on Thursday, August 28, the Board approved the recommendation from Laberge Group to accept the low bid from William L. Watson Co., Inc. of Eden, NY, for rehabilitation of the Weir Reynolds Community Pool at a cost of $673,800. Bids were also received from DeBrino Caulking Associated, Inc. of Castleton, NY, for $695,722 and from Patterson-Stevens, Inc. of Tonawanda, NY, for $746,360.
[private]Pool demolition and gutter installation is expected to begin as soon as possible and continue into the fall. The contract completion date is June 1, 2015.
The scope of the project includes demolition and removal of current pool debris, pre-sloped polyester polymer concrete trench drain and grate including connection to the catch basin, main pool drain reconstruction and grates, expansion joint construction, lifeguard chairs, hand rails, a fixed chair lift that is ADA compliant, 2/3 meter diving board, cement based smooth troweled pool finish, reinforced concrete deck and equipment pads, treated pool water and chemistry, ceramic tile, grout, mortar, sealants and a complete continuous gutter system.
Short Term Bond
Town Supervisor Mark Surdam and Councilmen Bruce Patire and Dave Sutton agreed that there may be some short term bonding involved with paying for the pool. “We have enough money to pay for the repairs,” said Supervisor Surdam, “but we don’t want to deplete the Town’s Reserve Funds.”
Surdam said it was regrettable that the pool was not open this summer, but it was necessary. “The pool was built right and lasted 50 years,” he said. “We want it to last 50 years again.”
Slide Fund
Surdam is hoping a community effort will take place to see that a slide is installed at the pool. The cost of a slide was removed from the bidding process. At last month’s Board meeting a resolution was passed accepting $1,590 from the 50 years and over graduates of the Walter A. Wood High School and the money put in a Reserve Fund called the Hoosick Pool New Slide Fund. No particular slide has been picked out at this point as they vary so much in price and will require talks with the pool contractor as to what would be best.
Unsafe Structures
Town Building Inspector Ed King and Hoosick Falls Central School Building and Grounds Superintendent Paul Baker addressed the Board regarding an abandoned property next to the school, at 21169 NY 22 owned by Debbie Green. King said the brush is too thick for him to get to the building. He had several pictures of the property and pointed out that the porch roof has collapsed. Baker said at times he has seen water just running out of the building. The Board approved starting the procedure necessary to see that the building is taken down.
The Board also approved King’s request to contact the Rensselaer County Health Department regarding a public safety issue at the Walter Quell property at 26 Brenenstuhl Road. In this case, King’s photos showed people living in a camper and junk metal pieces on the property. Again, the Board approved King do whatever is necessary to resolve the situation.[/private]
