Girls Soccer Defeated By Mt. Anthony

September 5, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Steve Bradley

The HFCS girls varsity soccer team started the season with a Friday evening under the lights game at Mt. Anthony High School in Bennington. Led by new head coach Brittany Pine, who has been an integral part of the HFCS soccer coaching staff for many years, the girls had their ups and downs throughout the game. With the loss of several key players due to graduation, many players were varsity starters for the first time.

The defense did well to hold the Patriots to only one goal. Early in the first half much of the game was played in the Panther end of the field. The Panthers never got a first half shot on goal, and during the entire game scoring chances were rare. But as the game progressed, the time in each other’s offensive ends evened out.

Mt. Anthony scored a first half goal. The Panthers had a couple of second half scoring opportunities, but excellent play by the Mt. Anthony goalie thwarted those. In the end, even with the defense holding the Patriots to the one score, the Panthers couldn’t catch the break needed to tie the game.

Next up the Panthers will face Catholic Central on Friday evening, September 5, under the HFCS lights beginning at 7 pm. Next Wednesday, September 10, the team will travel to Tamarac to take on the Bengals at 4:15 pm.
