Panthers Dominate HFCS Field Hockey Tourney

September 12, 2014 By eastwickpress

by Steve Bradley

The Lady Panthers weren’t very gracious hostesses at their tournament. They did not allow their opponents to score. In the championship game, the Panthers barely allowed the opponent to step on the Panther end of the field.

Friday the Ladies played Columbia, normally a formidable foe. But the Panthers were not in a giving mood and shut the Blue Devils out. Columbia had a couple chances to score but were unable to get the ball past goalie Cassie Sherman. At the other end of the field Columbia’s goalie stopped 11 shots, but 6 got by her. Caytlyn Springer led the attack with four goals, and Ally Burdick added 2. Maddy Ryan had three assists, and Lillian Hickey had one.

In Saturday’s championship game the Panthers and Emma Willard Jesters squared off. The game was a complete mismatch. Hoosick Falls brought cannons – Emma Willard showed up with slingshots. The game started, and the action immediately moved directly in front of the Jester’s goal and stayed there for the remainder of the game.

The Emma Willard goalie was barraged by shots throughout the game. She actually did pretty well, stopping 25 shots, but four others got by her. Panther goalie Sherman, on the other hand, could have spent the entire game on a chaise lounge relaxing, as the Jesters had no shots on goal. The end result was HF – 4, Emma Willard – 0.

Liz Ryan had three goals; Ally Burdick added one. Burdick also had 2 assists, and Caytlyn Springer added one.

Columbia defeated Salem in the consolation game.

Maddy Ryan was selected as the MVP of the tournament. Salem’s Jessica Vidal, Columbia’s Renee LaRose, Emma Willard’s MaryBeth Zahnleuter and Sasha Bonesteel along with Hoosick Falls’ Caytlyn Springer were selections as the All Tourney Team.
