On Monday morning, September 8, as part of Rensselaer County’s monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran Program, Thomas G. Restino was recognized. Receiving the many honors bestowed on his father was Justice Tom Restino, Jr. The ceremony, which began with Posting of the Colors by Lansingburgh veterans, was held in the Legislative Chambers. The event honored Restino’s life as a family man, veteran and community servant.
[private]County Legislative Chairman Martin Reed read of Restino’s life and long list of accomplishments. Tom was married to Helen Sluzas for 62 years. They had four children, Michele, Kathryn, Gregory and Thomas. Restino served in the National Guard, the Navy and the Army during Korea. He held a myriad of jobs during his lengthy career and dedicated himself to community service as well. He was elected Hoosick Falls Trustee in 1958 and Hoosick Town Justice in 1963. In 1973 he became a Rensselaer County Legislator, and in 1990 he was elected Hoosick Town Supervisor. He was also Past Commander, Past Adjutant and Chaplain of Hoosick Falls American Legion Post #40. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #178 and active with the March of Dimes, United Counseling Services of Bennington, VT, Literacy Volunteers of Eastern Rensselaer County and the St. Mary’s Alumni Association.
Congressman Chris Gibson said it was an honor to celebrate a man who was so involved in public service to his community. He then presented Tom, Jr. with a flag flown over the US Capital, “on behalf of a grateful nation.” He also presented him with a Congressional pin.
Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino said Restino was a trail blazer in the Legislature and he found his enjoyment is giving. She presented Tom with a Proclamation honoring his dad.
NYS Senator Kathy Marchione said Restino was an amazing man; a life well lived. She told Tom that as his son, “You must have so much pride in him and so many wonderful memories.” She presented Tom with a proclamation from the NYS Senate and the Liberty Medal, the highest honor New York State can present to a civilian, in his father’s name.
NYS Assemblyman John McDonald said Tom Restino was a man who truly cared for his family, his Country and his community.
Peter Goebel, Director of VFS-Veterans presented Tom with a plaque in honor of his father and his service to his country.
As the ceremony ended everyone proceeded outside for the raising of the flag presented in memory of Thomas Restino. For the next 30 days the flag will fly outside the Rensselaer County Office Building and then be returned to the family.
