During the HFCS Phillip Leonard Chapter National Honor Society Induction Ceremony Tuesday evening, October 28, Isabel McGuire’s fellow teacher and close friend, Ellie Danforth, announced that a Junior Honor Society for seventh and eighth grade students would be formed and named in honor of the late beloved math teacher and Honor Society Advisor Isabel McGuire. Danforth said everyone was invited to the Induction Ceremony at 7 pm on Thursday, May 7, 2015.
The Honor Society further honored McGuire by presenting the school with a portrait of Isabel painted by artist Simeon Youngmann. “She was the epitome of school spirit and had a great commitment to the community. She is sorely missed and will never be replaced,” a member of the Honor Society said. High School Principal Stacy Vadney said she was proud and honored to accept the portrait on behalf of the school.
The Symphonic Band performed “Elegy” by William Payne, arranged by conductor Rob Allen. He dedicated the moving piece to the late Payne and to Isabel McGuire.
Honor Society Advisor Thessalia Nielsen welcomed everyone to the event and acknowledged the many activities in which the Honor Society is involved, including the Christmas Wish and tutoring programs.
Elizabeth Philpott led the Pledge of Allegiance, Maxwell Haar introduced the program, Casie Mann described the Honor Society Requirements, Sarah Schultz explained the Honor Society emblem and the four principles – Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service – were described by Abigail Brown, Rachel Pine, Madeline Ryan and Shaelynn Kelly.
New members were tapped, brought onto the stage, dressed in robes and all recited the National Honor Society Pledge, led by Alyssa Houghton. Mrs. Vadney accepted the new members.
In honoring retiring Spanish teacher Kathy Crannell for Teacher Recognition Lindsey McMahon said the dedicated teachers at HFCS are what make the school unique and Ms. Crannell is one of those special teachers. She made every student feel special. “She exemplified what a teacher is,” McMahon said. Crannell thanked everyone for the honor, first in Spanish and then in English.
Mrs. Nielsen presented the Jeffrey Stratton Memorial Award to Shaelynn Kelly, and Mrs. Danforth presented the First Annual Isabel McGuire Award to Madeline Ryan.
The candle lighting, old members passing the torch to new members, and recessional completed the program in the auditorium.
Refreshments were served in the cafeteria where Maxwell Haar and Sarah Schultz presented the new members with their certificates.
