Registrations are now being accepted for participants in the Polar Plunge at Grafton Lakes State Park. The Winter Fest is in its 30th year with events occurring all day on January 24. The plunge happens promptly at 1 pm with check-in beginning at noon by Long Pond beach. This event is open to the first 50 people who pre-register. The fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt and a hot drink. Heated changing areas are available nearby but bring warm clothes for before and immediately after.
Participants will take turns charging into the frigid water while the New York State Police Ice Dive team provides safety. Spectators are welcome and provide a nice wind block for the event. This year, the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park will provide a fun prize for Silliest Costume, but come in whatever “swim attire” you like.
Raising Funds For The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
The purpose of the Plunge is to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. The genetic defect causes thick, sticky mucus that leads primarily to poor lung function, lung infections and poor digestion. The Foundation supports research in finding controls and hopefully a cure for the disease.
The 30th Annual Winter Festival will also include snow bowling, horse drawn carriage rides through the wintry landscape, Newfoundland sled dog rides, kid contests, guided outings and much more. Main events run from 10 am to 4 pm. The Ice Fishing Contest is open to kids and adults, with registration starting at 5:30 am.
