Petersburgh Boy Scout Troop 222 Has Successful Day At Klondike Derby

February 6, 2015 By eastwickpress

submitted by Scoutmaster Andy Zlotnick

Boy Scout Troop 222 out of Petersburgh entered two sleds in the Twin Rivers Council, Mahikan District Klondike Derby this year held at the Rotary Scout Reservation in Poestenkill, NY. Both sleds were built by scouts in the troop over the years and held up very well in this year’s competition. [private]The Scouts in Troop 222 entered both sleds in the Bear division which is made up of younger scouts below the rank of First Class. Each sled had four scouts assigned by patrol, the Pirates and the Eagles. On the Pirates sled were: Andrew Joyes, Wyatt Cameron, Anthony Homan and Joshua Zlotnick. On the Eagles sled were: CJ Bortnick, William Homan, Logan Barto and Gavin Bink. The Pirates achieved an overall standing in the Bear division of 2nd Place and the Eagles taking 3rd place overall. The Two sleds combined to earn 1st and 3rd place in the Sled Maneuver, 3rd in Trail Lunch & Fire Building, 2nd place in: Lashing, Shelter Building, Bear Bag Toss and Ice Rescue.

Andrew Joyes throws a rope to Joshua Zlotnick who was the victim who supposedly fell through thin ice while Anthony Homan checks on the second victim (Wyatt Cameron) who fell through thin ice but had already been rescued. Anthony triaged the victim to see what other injuries he may have and treat those injuries appropriately. Photo by Andy Zlotnick.

The boys had a great time demonstrating their skills and learning a few new skills along the trail. The experience is meant to resemble an Alaskan Klondike dog sled race, only the Scouts are the dogs. Some of the events the scouts encountered were designed to test their strength, while others were designed to test teamwork, and yet others were designed to test their problem solving skills.
