For the first time, Stephentown, Berlin and Grafton fire departments combined efforts in their annual April recruitment drive.
Since the recruitment target is the generation now coming of age, the firemen focused their publicity efforts on Berlin High School, in addition to publicity in The Eastwick Press. [private]The strategy was successful, as Berlin had one, Grafton two, and Stephentown had four, with a fifth possible. The fire departments involved thank Mary Grant, School District Executive Secretary, for her assistance.
Stephentown displayed all their apparatus on the station apron and set up a tent for serving a barbecue lunch. Passers-by stopped to say hello and check out the activity, and the serious recruits got an in-depth tour and briefing on duties of a new recruit.
Junior members, under age 18, are legally limited to non-hazardous activities within a fire department, so new recruits will quickly learn what they can and can not do.
