George Brimmer

Grafton – George H. Brimmer, 86, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, April 24, 2015.  Born in Petersburgh on May 3, 1928, he was the son of the late Darius G. and Ethel M. Jones Brimmer.  George attended schools in Petersburgh, Berlin, Hoosick Falls and received his GED at Albany High School in Albany, NY.

Shortly after the start of the Korean War, George enlisted in the US Army in 1950 and served as a tank gunner in the 2nd ReconOb-brimmer old.jpeg Co., 2nd Infantry Division and earned his sergeant stripes at that time in heavy combat duty before being honorably discharged in 1953.

George worked a couple of seasons on highway construction, a short time at the Cornish Wire in Williamstown, MA and also worked at Albany Felt Co. for several years.  He then was employed for over 20 years at the Watervliet Arsenal as a machinist before retiring.

George belonged to the Petersburgh Fire Co. and American Legion, the Brunswick Fire Co., Brunswick Elks and the Brunswick VFW and was a life member of the Poestenkill VFW.  He was an avid deer hunter, fisherman and a Boston Red Sox fan.

He is the beloved husband of Catherine “Kate” Clancy Brimmer; devoted father of John E. Brimmer of West Halifax, VT and Jeffrey Brimmer of Rensselaer; proud grandfather of Shelby, Aubrey and Bailey Brimmer and the late Lauren Lynn Brimmer; nephew of Alice (Byron) Hodges of Petersburgh; uncle of Terry and Randy Jones and several other nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister, Hazel Jones.

Ob-brimmer newThe funeral was held Monday, April 27 from the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home in Petersburgh and at Our Lady of Victory Church, Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated.  Interment followed in Meadowlawn Cemetery, Petersburgh.

Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Sunday evening, April 26.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sullivan Jones VFW Post 7466, 25 Veterans Street, Poestenkill, NY  12140, Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Avenue, Troy, NY  12180 or to Community Hospice of Rensselaer, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY  12144.
