Hoosick Falls Memorial Day Parade

Memorial Day Rites in the Village of Hoosick Falls will begin on Monday, May 25, with the raising of the Flag by the American Legion Commander Ike Powers at Maple Grove and St. Mary’s Cemeteries. At 8 am the Flag will be raised at Wood Memorial Park with a salute by the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

[private]At 8:15 am the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Legion Auxiliaries, accompanied by the Hoosick Falls High School Band will assemble at the corner of Main St. and Wilder Ave. and march to the Shop Bridge to honor men of the Navy who lost their lives at sea. The Legion will again fire a volley and taps will be sounded.

The Parade Committee will honor the dead of the Civil War at Monument Park, located at the junction of Classic and High Streets at 8:45 am. At 9:15 am . World War Veterans and the American Legion, accompanied by the American Legion Auxiliaries will assemble at the World War I and Veterans Memorial located in Wood Memorial Park. Wreaths will be placed at WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnam monuments. The wreaths will be placed by the American Legion Auxiliary.

The parade, under the direction of Kevin O’Malley and consisting of  two units, will assemble at 9:15 am and step off sharply at 10. The first unit will assemble on Main St. and Eberle Way. The second from Trustco Bank south on Main St

The line of March will proceed down John Street and up Church Street to the HAYC3 Armory and the Town of Hoosick Community Center, where it will pause for a brief tribute to the men and women who served during World War II.

The Line of March will then continue to the intersection of Main Street. At this point a momentary pause will be held while local clergy offer a prayer for deceased Veterans. The American Legion Honor Guard will fire a volley and taps will be played by a member of the HFCS Band. The parade will continue down Main Street, marching into Wood Memorial Park. All units are asked to march into the park and to remain assembled while Memorial Day Ceremonies are held.  Hoosick Town Supervisor Mark Surdam and Hoosick Falls Mayor David Borge will deliver official welcomes.

A few Words of Remembrance will be spoken during the ceremonies by Rensselaer County Legislator Stan Brownell and representatives from the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mark Folgert will be the keynote speaker.

At the closing of the ceremony the American Legion Honor Guard, under the command of Legion Squad Commander Ike Powers will fire a Volley Salute. Taps will be sounded, followed by chimes from St. Mark’s Church playing “America.”

Father Tom Zelker, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Church will give the invocation. The program will close with the “National Anthem,” played by the HFCS Band, under the direction of Robert Allen.

Mark Folgert Named As Grand Marshal Of Memorial Day Parade

Hoosick Post #40 American Legion is proud to announce that Mark Folgert has been named Grand Marshal of the 2015 Memorial Day Parade.

Mark is a graduate of Hoosick Falls Central School and Paul Smith’s College. He served in active military duty in the US Air Force as a security specialist, nuclear security, IBCM Fields, 1st Strike Nuclear Bombers, and at various nuclear wepons storage locations and attained the rank of E-4 Sergeant.

Mark also served with NATO while deployed overseas as a US Army Signal Corp Multi-Channel Communications operator. Attained the rank of E-4 SPC 4th Class. Served again with NATO in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down from 1989 to 1992.

Mark enlisted this year in the all-volunteer New York State Guard and was appointed Senior Supply NCO for the 10th Brigade.

In civilian life Mark worked for Verizon for 17 years, most recently as a fiber -optic system analyst. He has served on the Board of  the Town of Hoosick Housing Athority, an active member of the Ken Baker Scholarship Foundation. Mark has also been a volunteer football coach at Hoosick Falls Central School for the past 15 seasons.

Mark and his wife Carol Herbet Folgert reside on Rogers Avenue in Hoosick Falls.
