Saint Mary’s Academy Second Annual Quack

June 4, 2015 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson

Shortly after 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 30, little yellow rubber ducks floated a course on the Walloomsac River outside Brown’s Brewery. A couple hundred kids and adults watched as the 1,200 little ducks bobbed their way from the start to the finish line. [private]Some of the little creatures got hung up at the rocks where the race began. Others got sidetracked along the route, but none the less many of them completed the journey. All the ducks were numbered. The first across the finish line was owned by Jamie Tudor who won $1,000. Coming in second was a duck with Chris O’Brien’s number on it and was worth $250. The third little duck was owned by Ethan Hunt and was worth $100.

This was the second annual St. Mary’s Academy “Quack” and once again all the ducks sold out and the event was a big success. Many people sported purple tee shirts with big yellow ducks on them. It rained at the start of the afternoon event, but quickly passed. It didn’t spoil anything as the youngsters enjoyed a variety of games before and after the race. There was plenty of food on hand to be enjoyed, especially Strawberry Shortcake made and donated by SMA alum Joanie James.

Kathy Hunt won the Quack Quilt which was made and donated by Cheryl Cullen.

Rubber ducks floating down the race course in the Second Annual St. Mary’s Academy Quack event on Saturday provided a sylvan scene. But the background noise was not at all calm or quiet, as people called out encouragement to help their ducks to victory. Pat Haynes was the most enthusiastic of all, shouting, “That yellow one is mine! My yellow one is going to win!” (Bea Peterson photo)
