Shingling The House

June 25, 2015 By eastwickpress

Tuesday, July 14, 1835: Today brother Sylvester came to shingle over the front roof to my house and I helped make stagings and tore off old shingles. Today my wife called to Platt’s store and had ten pounds shingle nails charged.

[private]Wednesday: Today brother Sylvester shingled on my house and Mr. Amos Chapman came and began to work his month towards his house rent. Said Chapman made chestnut shingle today and I sawed shingle blocks and jointed shingle.

Monday: This evening I went and fetched Polly Wylie over to Peter Surdam’s and Peter had a son born but was dead. Today and night said Peter used my horse to fetch Doc Right and carry him home again.

Wednesday: We worked at haying, said Chapman helps. I jointed some shingle and brother Sylvester shingled part of a day on my house. Towards night I and my wife rode to the Shakers. I paid 19 cts for turnip seed. We came from the shakers to N. Nichols Store and I got trusted for molasses, sugar and rice, and indigo and spice.

Thursday: I jointed shingle and worked at hay. Today brother Sylvester worked part of a day shingling on my house.  Today Mr. Amos Chapman worked on his turnip yard and sowed them.  Tonight Harriet Chapman quit working for us. Her mother sent for her for Mrs. Chapman is sick, and I carried my wife this evening to the widow Surdam’s to see if she would come and work for us, but she could not.

Friday: This afternoon I drew rails to fence the turnip yard that Mr. Chapman sowed to the halves. [/private]
