Monday September 28. 1835: On this evening I took my single wagon and carried my wife to Lebanon to Nathaniel Nichols Store and bought a few small articles to the amount of 27 cts. We then went to Edwin Griggs store and I paid 19 cts for half a pound bohea tea, and on the way home I called to Mr. Salmon Oins and got Judah Rowley’s cross cut saw to saw chestnut, and today I chopped and drew chestnut shingle timber.
[private]Wednesday: Today I took my covered wagon and carried Peter Surdam and his wife to Tyringham to the Shakers. On the way we called in Richmond to a tavern and bated. Peter paid 12 cts for bitters. We went through Lenox and got to the Shakers about half past two o’clock.
Thursday, October 1: Today we returned home from Tyringham. My wife went with me, to carry Peter Surdam and his wife. We came home by way of Pittsfield. We called in the west part of town to a tavern and bated and ate some victuals that the Shakers gave us to eat on the rode. Peter paid twelve cts for bitters and I paid three cts for beer. We got home about 3 o’clock.
Friday: I chopped and drew chestnut shingle logs and helped said James Harrington saw shingle bolts. This evening I laid up cider cheese.
Saturday: I went to Pittsfield with two barrels cider and 14 bushels apples. I sold them at 25 cts per and the cider at one dol per. Platt Wylie rode with me today.
Sunday: On this evening I took my single wagon and rode up to Joshua Carr’s to see if I could hire his boy to work but I could not and then I went to Moses Rouns to see if I could hire his daughter to work but could not. I returned home and on the way I called to N. Howard’s post office and got my newspapers.
Monday: On this week said James Harrington continues to work for me making shingles. I got out a grist of corn and took a grist of rye and went to H. Platt’s mill and while it was grinding I rode up to Harry Swann to see if I could hire his boy but I could not.
Friday, October 9: This forenoon I worked on the highway and this afternoon I chopped and drew a chestnut shingle tree and sawed some bolts and I got my sheep into my barn and divided my flock. I picked out sixteen and turned onto my Rodgers farm to keep, and left fifteen to home to sell. Today I shook sweet apple trees and we gathered apples. On this evening we had an apple bee and got about eleven bushels pared and about nine strung.[/private]
