Berlin Middle and High School FCCLA members have been busy developing their leadership skills and providing service to the greater Berlin community.  Katie Mellett, a Junior at BCS, serves as State Vice President of Finance and was one of forty-five representatives from New York to the National Leadership Meeting July 4 to 9 in Washington DC.  [private]

Accompanied by her advisor Dianne Mosher, chaperon Tammy Osterhout and fellow member and STAR event competitor Haley Hicks, Mellett attended general and business sessions of the national organization, participated in workshops and visited Senators Schumer and Gillibrand’s offices advocating for Career and Technical Education.  Over 5000 youth and 3000 adults participated in the “Take 5” Dance on the lawn of the US Capitol.  While in Washington, the group viewed the 4th of July fireworks, visited the Smithsonian, the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, the National Archives and ate at the Hard Rock Café.

July 27 to 29, four members of Berlin FCCLA and their advisor Dianne Mosher attended the New York State FCCLA Summer Leadership Camp in Owego, NY with the theme “FCCLA’s Groovy Situation”.  Katie Mellett, State Officer, Trevar Hall, Megan Harrison and Ashleigh Stevens  attended workshops led by former state and national officers.  Workshop topics included planning meetings, recruiting members, and parliamentary procedure, to name a few.  The highlight of the three day camp was the chicken barbecue and 1970s lip sync held in historic Hickory Park on the Susquehanna River.  These local leaders are now fired up to start planning the 2015-2016 Program of Work for the local chapter!

Giving service to the community is no new idea to FCCLA members.  August 3 and 4 members Sierra Maxon, Trevar Hall, Megan Harrison and Ashleigh Steven volunteered at the United Methodist Church Clothing Giveaway at the Main Street Berlin church.  The youth carried out bags and boxes of clothes, hung them on racks, sorted them and prepared for the community event.

FCCLA will be having two summer meetings.  The first meeting of the school year will be Monday, September 14 from 2:10 to 4 pm in Room 119.  FCCLA, (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) is a dynamic and effective national Career and Technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Science education.  FCCLA is the only national student organization with the family as its central focus.  Since 1945, members have been making a difference in their families, careers and communities by addressing important personal, work and societal issues.  Berlin Chapter FCCLA is open to students in grades 6-12.  Meetings are held biweekly on Mondays.  A full calendar of meetings, including the two August gatherings, and events can be obtained by emailing dmosher@berlincentral.org.  Please put FCCLA in the subject line.  FCCLA All The Way!
